The Duwamish River is what they call the Green River when it becomes affected by the tide until ending up in Puget Sound. About the last 7 or so miles of the Green. A couple of years ago the lower Duwamish waterway, wich includes one of the busiest shipping ports on the west coast, was declared a 'Federal Superfund site'. The EPA once had it listed in the top ten most polluted rivers in america. Turns out that dumping industrial waste or whatever you want for 80+ years is bad on the environment. But cleanup is currently underway. That, along with a 112 million dollars to restore the chinook salmon population are eventually going to restore the tainted waters of the Duwamish to a more user friendly standard. It's industrial 'charm' of the area doesn't do much for tourism. Oh yeah, .....the point of this horror story, the D in 'DirtyD'. Yup you guessed it. Duwamish. Not to many people know that.

DIRECTIONS
From Portland, Oregon- take I-5 north until you get to exit 156, that puts you on Hwy 599, take the first exit(INTERURBAN AVE.). At the light take a left onto Interurban Ave. At the second light go right on Macadam Rd. This crosses a bridge(DuwamishRiver) that is NOT jumpable due to shallow water depth. Proceed to stopsign and go straight. You will see the bridge on your left in about 1 minute and you can park on the left.

Caution: The Duwamish River is affected by the tide.
When the tide is high the jump from railing measures about 24 feet with about 12 feet of water. Even though there is a sandbar on the bottom i do not recomend jumping at low tide. The tide usually only changes about 6 to 7 feet, making it about 30 feet into 6 feet of water. This of course doesn't make it impossible, but does increase the chances of serious bodily harm. When the tide's low, diving from the bridge would be a mistake. Most local kids jump from the downstream side. The water depth is pretty much the same all the way across. When the salmon are running(early Sep. to late Oct.) sealions sometimes become a factor. A sealion feeding frenzy is not a recomended landingzone.
